What Are Hymns?

Hymns are simply just, "Songs of Praise." Just what does this imply though? Are hymns different than other songs of praise? Who are they truly being sung to? Did hymns always sound like they do presently? These are especially wonderful questions, and I am here to better help you to figure out what hymns are. Although there are a number of types of hymns, I'd like to discuss the most common type of hymn; a Christian hymn.



Often, if someone asks that you sing a song of praise, a definite image arises in your mind. For me personally, it is a crowd of folks within a large room, eyes shut, singing songs with each other together whilst some sort of music group on stage guides them. DISCLAIMER: The impression within my brain is almost entirely influenced by having grown up in a primarily Caucasian, Evangelical, English-Speaking, American church. This isn't to state that that everyone uses the same exact imagery, but nonetheless, it is where I am coming from. I know that lots of of you may relate.



Every time another person asks me to sing some sort of hymn, however, a totally different imagery comes to your mind. Why is that?



It's because of the fact that most of us associate hymns to something older. Something sacred. Something greatly and inherently significant. It's always been this way for as long as hymns have been around. Hymns seem to have been woven out of rich and authentic meaning. The actual vocabulary used might be somewhat unfamiliar to many, and yet possess the feel of something ancient, powerful and extremely important. They usually are straightforward, evoking potent imagery, emotion and reflection.



The primary purpose of a hymn is always to connect God's qualities and His relationship with human beings. Hymns typically are being sung exclusively to God and often to Jesus. They sing praise to Him as well as exalt Him.



Hymns weren't always set to music. The fact is, up until somewhat recently, hymn lyrics were split from the melody, and a side note was made in order to suggest which standard song melodies would work for that specific rhyme and meter.
